Austin’s best chefs, bakers hosting fundraiser bake sale for Virginia B. Wood

Longtime Austin food writer Virginia B. Wood has been struggling with health issues in recent years, and the food community is coming together for a bake sale to raise money for her medical care next week.

From 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 1, Lenoir will host Batter Up for Virginia in its wine garden at 1807 S. First Street.

This won’t be just any bake sale, though. Dozens of the city’s best bakers are coming with their best treats, and all of the proceeds will go to the beloved restaurant critic, cookbook author, baker and caterer.

The event is being hosted by the Austin Food & Wine Alliance, Les Dames d’Escoffier’s Austin Chapter (Wood was named an honorary Dame in 2016) and several Chronicle colleagues. Participating bakers include Philip Speer of Bonhomie, Tavel Bristol-Joseph of Emmer & Rye, Callie Speer of Holy Roller, Janina O’Leary of Play Dough, Bud Royer of Royers Round Top Café, Olivia O’Neal of Sugar Mama’s Bakeshop and Stephen Bonin and Yolanda Diaz of Geraldine’s and Café 605.

In addition to sweets, you’ll find savory options including tamales from Jessica Maher and Todd Duplechan of Lenoir and a brisket kolache collaboration from David Norman of Easy Tiger and Aaron Franklin of Franklin Barbecue.
