It’s pecan season — the time of year when many of our yards fill up with these easily foraged nuts. But they can be a pain to crack open. Last week, a reader wrote me to inquire about where she could send her pecans to get them cracked.
My kids’ longtime daycare provider taught them how to crunch them under foot or squeeze two together in your hand to break through the outer shell, but that doesn’t exactly work with 20 pounds of pecans. It turns out that the Lamar Senior Activity Center, 2874 Shoal Crest Ave., continues to host its longtime pecan cracking service for 50 cents per pound. From 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Wednesday and Friday through the last week of January, you can bring in your nuts in brown paper bags labeled with your name and number and separated by size, with not more than 20 pounds in each bag.
Depending on how busy they are, you might have to come back a few days later to pick them up, and you can pay by cash or check only. They can’t shell the pecans, but you will get the pecans that you brought in back so that you can pick out the pecan halves when you get home.
